Sri Lanka Assures No Power Cuts Planned, Encourages Energy Conservation Among Citizens

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Sri Lankan government has announced that there are no plans for power cuts in the near future, despite the ongoing fuel shortage. However, officials have urged the public to use electricity sparingly.

“We have no intention of implementing power cuts at this juncture,” stated Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa during a special media briefing on Sunday, March 22.

“Not only the power, we also want to provide uninterrupted fuel supply as well,” he added.

In light of the situation, D.J.A.S. De S. Rajakaruna, Chairman of the state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), emphasized the importance of conserving electricity. He noted that the CPC is currently incurring a loss of Rs. 204.56 per litre of diesel, despite a significant price increase implemented the previous night.

“Going forward, you will receive electricity at night generated from diesel. The cost has risen by 140 rupees,” he informed reporters.

“People should understand this and should try to switch off at least one light, signboard, or road light to help alleviate the burden of this crisis,” he concluded.
