Colombo, Sri Lanka – September 6, 2026 – The Department of Meteorology (DMC), through its National Meteorological Centre’s Forecasting Division, has issued its latest weather outlook for Sri Lanka, detailing conditions expected for tomorrow, September 7, 2026. The forecast, released at 2:00 p.m. today, indicates a mix of showers and thundershowers across various parts of the island, with warnings for localized strong winds and rough seas.
Inland Weather: Showers Across Provinces, Fairly Heavy Falls Expected
For Monday, September 7th, citizens in the Uva, Central, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts, should prepare for showers or thundershowers that may occur at several places, particularly after 2:00 p.m. The DMC specifically highlights the potential for fairly heavy falls, exceeding 50 mm, in some areas within the Uva and Eastern provinces.
Meanwhile, the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, are expected to experience a few isolated showers.
The public is strongly urged to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which are likely to accompany thundershowers. These temporary severe conditions can pose significant risks.
Sun Directly Overhead in Southern Regions
Adding a celestial note to the forecast, the DMC reminds that the sun’s apparent southward relative motion means it will be directly over latitudes near Sri Lanka from August 28th to September 7th. Tomorrow, September 7th, at approximately 12:08 noon, the sun will be directly overhead in several southern locations, including Galle, Angulugaha, Imaduwa, Telijjawila, Yatiyana, and Tangalle.
Sea Area Outlook: Rough Conditions and Strong Winds Expected
The marine forecast for the next 24 hours warns of varying conditions for sea areas around the island.
Rainfall at Sea
- Showers are expected at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
- Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa, particularly during the evening or night.
Wind Conditions
Winds across the sea areas will predominantly be South-westerly, with a general speed ranging between 30-40 kmph. However, wind speeds can increase significantly, reaching up to 50 kmph at times, in the sea areas off the coast stretching from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.
State of Sea
Navigators and coastal communities should note that the sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar will be fairly rough at times. Furthermore, during thundershowers, there is a strong possibility of temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas. Mariners are advised to exercise caution and heed official warnings.
The Department of Meteorology regularly updates its forecasts to ensure public safety and awareness. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.
