The comprehensive advisory, issued at 5:30 a.m. today by the Forecasting Division of the National Meteorological Centre, highlights prevailing atmospheric conditions indicating afternoon thundershowers in several provinces and warns of fairly strong winds in specific regions across the island and its surrounding sea areas.
Inland Weather Patterns: Thundershowers and Winds
According to the DMC, atmospheric conditions are increasingly favourable for the development of afternoon thundershowers. These are primarily anticipated in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, and Uva provinces over the next few days. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for potential rainfall and associated lightning activity.
Several spells of showers are also anticipated in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Specific districts including Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya are also expected to experience these showers.
Furthermore, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as the Mullaitivu district, particularly after 2:00 p.m.
Fairly strong winds, reaching speeds of approximately 30-40 kmph, can be expected at times. These winds will primarily affect the western slopes of the Central hills, North-central and North-western provinces, and the Hambantota and Matale districts.
The Department of Meteorology strongly urges the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which often accompany thundershowers. Safety during such weather events is paramount, and it is advisable to seek shelter and avoid open areas or tall structures.
Sun Overhead: A Unique Celestial Event
A notable astronomical event is currently underway. Due to its apparent southward relative motion, the sun is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during the period of August 28 to September 7. Specifically for today, September 2, the sun will be directly overhead at approximately 12:10 p.m. in the areas of Anamaduwa, Moragollagama, Dambulla, Manampitiya, and Valaichchenai. This phenomenon often leads to higher temperatures during midday in these specific locations.
Coastal and Sea Area Conditions
For sea areas around the island over the next 24 hours, the forecast, also issued at 5:30 a.m. today, details the following:
- Rainfall: Showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Hambantota, passing via Colombo and Galle.
- Winds: Winds will predominantly be South-westerly, with speeds ranging from 30-40 kmph. However, mariners and coastal communities should note that wind speeds can significantly increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Similarly, wind speeds may reach up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.
- Sea State: The sea areas off the coasts from Hambantota to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar may also be fairly rough at times.
- Wave Height: Of particular concern, the wave height could increase by about 2.0 – 2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil, passing via Colombo, Galle, and Matara. This could pose risks to naval activities and fishing operations.
The DMC advises fishermen and naval communities operating in these sea areas to exercise caution and consider suspending activities if conditions become too hazardous. It is crucial to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.
