Gazette notification issued in Sri Lanka on August 07, 2026, titled “Judicature (Amendment) Bill”.
This Bill proposes amendments to the Judicature Act, No. 2 of 1978. The main amendments are as follows:
- Increase in the Number of High Court Judges (Clause 2): It proposes to increase the number of High Court Judges from 110 to 120.
- Enhancement of Retirement Age for Judges (Clause 3):
- It proposes to increase the retirement age of High Court Judges from 61 to 63 years.
- It proposes to set the retirement age for all other Judges and Magistrates at 62 years. This amendment will take precedence even if it contradicts the provisions of the “Public and Judicial Officers (Retirement) Ordinance”.
- Sinhala Text to Prevail in Case of Inconsistency (Clause 4): It states that in the event of any inconsistency between the Sinhala and Tamil texts of this Act, the Sinhala text shall prevail.
