Massive 463kg ‘Ice’ Seizure at Colombo Port Foils Re-export Attempt; Four Arrested

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – 04 September 2026 – In a significant blow to international drug trafficking networks, Sri Lankan authorities successfully intercepted a colossal shipment of 463 kilograms of Methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘Ice’, at the Colombo Port on the afternoon of August 31, 2026. The illicit consignment, valued at billions of rupees, was found meticulously concealed within a container destined for re-export, leading to the arrest of four individuals, including three Pakistani nationals.

High-Level Intelligence Leads to Bust

The operation was initiated based on critical intelligence shared by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Ranmal Kodithuwakku. This vital information indicated the presence of a substantial quantity of ‘Ice’ within a container stored at the port yard, which had arrived from a foreign country and was intended for re-export, rather than local distribution.

Acting swiftly on this intelligence, officers from the Central Crime Investigation Bureau obtained a search order from the Aluthgama Magistrate’s Court, providing the legal framework to inspect the suspicious container. The meticulous planning and coordination underscore the commitment of Sri Lankan law enforcement to combat drug-related crimes.

Joint Operation Uncovers Hidden Drugs

On August 31, 2026, a joint team comprising officers from the Central Crime Investigation Bureau, with crucial assistance from the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) and Sri Lanka Customs, moved in to inspect the designated container. The inspection revealed the drugs were cleverly hidden amidst a legitimate consignment of body wipes (towels), showcasing the sophisticated methods employed by traffickers to evade detection.

The sheer volume of the seizure – 463 kilograms – highlights the scale of the international drug trade and the critical role Colombo Port plays as a potential transit point for such illicit consignments.

Four Suspects Apprehended

In connection with the major drug bust, authorities initially arrested a 44-year-old resident of Dematagoda, identified as the individual responsible for facilitating the container’s entry into the country. Further interrogation of this suspect led to the rapid apprehension of three additional individuals allegedly linked to the importation of the drug consignment.

The three subsequently arrested suspects have been identified as Pakistani nationals, aged 33, 36, and 51. Their arrests underscore the international dimension of this trafficking attempt and the collaborative efforts between various agencies to dismantle such criminal enterprises.

Further Investigations Underway

Following the successful seizure and arrests, both the confiscated ‘Ice’ consignment and the four suspects have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau. The PNB is now conducting comprehensive further investigations into the incident, aiming to uncover the full extent of the network involved, identify masterminds, and ascertain the intended final destination of the massive drug shipment.

This major interception sends a strong message to drug traffickers that Sri Lanka will not be used as a conduit for illegal narcotics, reinforcing the nation’s resolve in the global fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
