Colombo, Sri Lanka – August 30, 2026 – The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’s Election Commission has officially confirmed the appointment of Mrs. Sawanawadu Nirosha Nilmini as a new member to the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, filling a recent vacancy in Ward No. 07, Katukoliha. The appointment was formalized through an Extraordinary Gazette notice, No. 2502/47, issued on August 21, 2026.
Details of the Appointment
The vacancy arose due to the resignation of Mr. Godage Siril, who previously held the office as a member of the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, representing the Jathika Jana Balawegaya political party. In accordance with Section 66A(1)(a) of the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance (Chapter 262), the Returning Officer for the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, Mr. Wewelwala Hewage Ravindra Wijaya Kumara, initiated the process to fill the vacant seat.
The Secretary of the Jathika Jana Balawegaya, as the recognized political party to which the former member belonged, was mandated to nominate a suitable candidate from Ward No. 07 Katukoliha who met the eligibility criteria and was not disqualified under Section 9 of the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance. Following this directive, the party communicated its decision to nominate Mrs. Sawanawadu Nirosha Nilmini.
Official Declaration and Gazette Publication
Acting upon the nomination received, Mr. W. H. R. Wijaya Kumara, the Returning Officer for the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, formally declared Mrs. Sawanawadu Nirosha Nilmini as duly elected to the office of member for Ward No. 07 Katukoliha. This declaration, dated August 20, 2026, from the District Elections Office in Galle, was subsequently published in the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2502/47 on August 21, 2026, making the appointment official.
This swift action ensures the continuous representation of the Katukoliha ward within the Hikkaduwa Urban Council, upholding the democratic process and the smooth functioning of local governance in the area.
