Colombo, 17 August 2026 – The Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority (SLVTA) today commemorated its 31st anniversary with a significant nationwide initiative, successfully conducting a comprehensive technical support Shramadana programme across 33 selected hospitals. This collaborative effort, undertaken in partnership with the “Clean Sri Lanka” national programme, saw a powerful display of youth engagement and practical skill application aimed at bolstering the country’s public healthcare infrastructure.
The flagship event of the day was held at the Castle Street Women’s Hospital in Colombo, graced by the presence of Deputy Minister of Vocational Education, Nalin Hewage. The programme distinguished itself by moving beyond traditional Shramadana activities, focusing specifically on critical technical repairs and maintenance within hospital premises. This included essential work on electrical and plumbing systems, vital infrastructure improvements, and general environmental cleaning.
Generation Z: Opportunity Creators in Nation-Building
A defining characteristic of this anniversary programme was the active and voluntary participation of Generation Z and current vocational training students. This initiative provided a unique platform for young individuals to apply their practical knowledge and specialized skills – spanning electronics, electrical work, plumbing, building maintenance, and mechanical work – directly to strengthen the country’s healthcare system. The main event at Castle Street Women’s Hospital saw the attendance of several prominent figures. Among them were Clean Sri Lanka Colombo District Coordinator and Member of Parliament Dr. Najith Indika, Additional Director General of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat Kapila Senarath, and Director (Social) Chinthaka Rajakaruna. From the SLVTA, Chairman Vijitha Weerathunga, Vice Chairman T. Dharmaraja, Director General Major General Priyantha Weerasinghe (Retd.), Director of Vocational Training Milinda, and Director of Career Guidance, Job Placement and Promotion Chandana Vidanapathirana were present, underscoring the authority’s commitment to the initiative. Other notable attendees included Director (Volunteer Services) H.P.S. Shantha, senior journalist Nishantha Alwis, Assistant Director of the National Vocational Training Institute, Narahenpita, Bhatia Amaranath, and Deputy Director of Career Guidance and Promotion Sumith Korala.
