COLOMBO, 10 September 2026 – Sri Lanka is actively enhancing its institutional capabilities in sovereign risk assessment and debt sustainability analysis, with a crucial five-day training program organized by the International Monetary Fund’s South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Center (IMF SARTTAC) currently underway in Colombo.
The specialized course on the Sovereign Risk and Debt Sustainability Framework (SRDSF), running from September 7 to 11, 2026, at the Taj Samudra, marks a significant step in the IMF’s broader capacity development initiative for the region. The program convenes a diverse group of international participants alongside key officials from various Sri Lankan institutions, including the Public Debt Management Office (PDMO) and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Enhancing Analytical Prowess for Prudent Financial Management
The core objective of the training is to significantly improve participants’ technical skills. This includes a deep dive into assessing sovereign risks, rigorously evaluating debt sustainability, and accurately measuring the potential impact of macroeconomic and financing shocks on public debt. Beyond skill development, the initiative actively promotes knowledge sharing and the invaluable exchange of international best practices, crucial for developing robust financial frameworks.
In his opening remarks, the Director General of Sri Lanka’s Public Debt Management Office underscored the paramount importance of cultivating strong analytical capabilities. He highlighted that such expertise is indispensable for guiding sound, evidence-based public debt decisions – a critical component for the nation’s economic stability and growth trajectory. The training, therefore, presents a vital opportunity for local officials, particularly those within the PDMO, to integrate international approaches into their debt sustainability analysis and sovereign risk assessment methodologies.
Strengthening Sri Lanka’s Financial Resilience
The specialized knowledge and expertise garnered from this high-level training are expected to directly strengthen Sri Lanka’s ability to proactively identify and effectively manage emerging sovereign risks. By embedding these enhanced analytical tools and international perspectives within its financial governance, the nation aims to operate within a more resilient and sustainable financial framework, fostering greater confidence among investors and international partners.
This strategic investment in human capital and institutional capacity aligns with Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to reinforce its economic stability and ensure prudent management of its public finances for long-term prosperity.
