Sri Lanka Police Repatriate Notorious Organised Crime Suspect ‘Bus Lalith’ from UAE

COLOMBO, 25 August 2026 – In a significant triumph for Sri Lankan law enforcement, Lalith Kannangara, widely known as ‘Bus Lalith’ and a key suspect allegedly involved in directing organised criminal activities from overseas, has been successfully apprehended and brought back to the country. His repatriation marks a major breakthrough in ongoing investigations aimed at dismantling transnational criminal networks.

International Pursuit and Arrest

Kannangara, who had been evading authorities while residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was returned to Sri Lanka in the early hours of today, 25 August 2026, via the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. His arrest was facilitated by an Interpol Red Notice, which the Sri Lanka Police had previously obtained in connection with the various criminal activities attributed to him.

The fugitive’s capture dates back to October 2025, when he was arrested in Dubai. This operation was the result of a meticulously coordinated effort involving Sri Lanka’s State Intelligence Service (SIS), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau (CCIB), working in close conjunction with the UAE Intelligence Unit and Dubai Police.

Diplomatic Channels and Repatriation Process

Following his arrest, the necessary legal and administrative documentation for Kannangara’s repatriation was formally submitted to the UAE authorities through diplomatic channels. This process was expedited in accordance with the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sri Lanka and the UAE, specifically designed to facilitate such international law enforcement cooperation.

A dedicated team comprising officers from the Sri Lanka Police and the State Intelligence Service subsequently travelled to the UAE to escort the suspect back. Upon his arrival in Sri Lanka, ‘Bus Lalith’ was promptly handed over to the Central Criminal Investigation Bureau (CCIB) for further extensive investigations and the commencement of necessary legal proceedings.

Strengthening International Cooperation

The successful repatriation of Lalith Kannangara underscores the critical importance of robust international cooperation among law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The collaborative efforts between Sri Lankan agencies and their counterparts in the UAE, particularly the invaluable assistance provided by the UAE authorities and Dubai Police, were instrumental throughout this complex process.

The Government of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Police have publicly expressed their profound appreciation and gratitude to the UAE authorities and Dubai Police for their unwavering assistance and cooperation. This joint operation serves as a powerful testament to the global commitment to combating transnational organised crime and ensuring that individuals wanted for serious offences are brought to justice, regardless of where they seek refuge.

While the specific criminal charges against the suspect are anticipated to be detailed during legal proceedings, his return is expected to provide crucial insights into the operations of organised crime networks impacting Sri Lanka.
