Colombo, 16 August 2026 – Sri Lanka recently underwent a significant review of its progress in implementing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) during the 35th session of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD Committee) in Geneva. The crucial interactive dialogue took place on 14th August 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.
Interactive Dialogue with UN Committee
The review, held at the United Nations Office in Geneva, involved an interactive dialogue between a high-level Sri Lankan Government Delegation and the CRPD Committee. This engagement provided a vital platform for both parties to assess Sri Lanka’s adherence to the Convention and to discuss future measures for enhanced inclusion and support for its citizens with disabilities.
High-Level Delegation Represents Sri Lanka
Leading Sri Lanka’s delegation was Dr. Upali Pannilage, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, underscoring the government’s seriousness regarding this international commitment. The delegation comprised a blend of in-person attendees in Geneva and virtual participants connecting from Colombo, ensuring comprehensive representation across relevant sectors.
The in-person contingent in Geneva included senior officials from the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Attorney-General’s Department. They were joined by officials from the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva. Virtually, from Colombo, senior officials and representatives from other crucial ministries and institutions participated, contributing to a holistic review.
A Decade of Commitment: Sri Lanka’s CRPD Journey
Sri Lanka’s journey with the CRPD dates back to its ratification in 2016, a testament to its early commitment to the principles enshrined in the Convention. Following ratification, the nation submitted its initial report under the Convention in October 2019, detailing the legislative, policy, and programmatic measures taken to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities.
Further demonstrating its proactive engagement, Sri Lanka responded to a comprehensive list of issues from the CRPD Committee in December 2025, providing additional information and clarifications. This latest review on August 14th served as an invaluable opportunity for the Government of Sri Lanka and the Committee to collaboratively take stock of the Convention’s implementation and foster a constructive dialogue on ongoing and future initiatives.
Global Peer Review
During its 35th session, running from 12 to 27 August 2026 in Geneva, the CRPD Committee is reviewing several nations. Sri Lanka was considered alongside Slovakia, Qatar, Lithuania, and Chile, highlighting the shared global effort to advance the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities worldwide.
