Here is a summary of the Twenty Second Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka: This Act may be cited as the “Twenty Second Amendment to the Constitution.”
The main changes are:
- Amendment of Article 107 of the Constitution:
- The retirement age for Judges of the Supreme Court has been extended to sixty-seven years.
- The retirement age for Judges of the Court of Appeal shall be sixty-five years.
- A special provision has been included regarding the retirement of the Chief Justice: the Chief Justice shall retire on either the date on which they reach the age of sixty-seven years or the date on which a period of six years is completed from the date of appointment as the Chief Justice, whichever occurs earlier.
- Amendment of Article 137 of the Constitution:
- The number of “other Judges” (of the Supreme Court) has been increased from “not more than nineteen” to “not more than twenty four.”
- In case of inconsistency between texts:
- In the event of any inconsistency between the Sinhala and Tamil texts of this Act, the Sinhala text shall prevail.
