FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has approved the implementation of 14 recommendations designed to enhance the country’s resilience to climate disasters, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. These recommendations were put forward by a committee established in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
The recommendations are divided into two categories: seven focus on strategic research and system development, while the other seven pertain to implementation and monitoring.
Cyclone Ditwah affected approximately 2.3 million individuals and caused an estimated economic loss of 4.1 billion dollars. In light of this, the committee was tasked with evaluating the cyclone as a climate stress test and providing recommendations on transitioning from a reactive ‘response and recovery’ framework to a proactive ‘science-based resilience’ framework, according to Jayatissa.
