US Embassy in Sri Lanka Urges Citizens to Heighten Safety Precautions

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The US Embassy in Colombo has urged US citizens in Sri Lanka to exercise increased caution and follow the security alerts it issues.

“Americans abroad should follow the guidance in security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” it stated while sharing a caution issued by the Department of State, which advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.

“U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and/or Americans throughout the world.”

The embassy warned that periodic airspace closures may cause travel disruptions and urged citizens to enroll at step.state.gov to receive the latest security alerts. It also recommended following the “U.S. Department of State – Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” channel on WhatsApp or @TravelGov on X.

“When planning travel, carefully read the Travel Advisory and detailed information for your destination, as well as any recent alerts at travel.state.gov/destination.”

In related news, US President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Iran, threatening to target Tehran’s power plants if it does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has responded by stating that it will strike energy infrastructure and desalination facilities across the region if its energy grid is attacked.
