Justice Ministry Unveils New Management Information System to Boost Efficiency, Transparency, and Accountability

The Ministry of Justice and National Integration has officially unveiled a new Management Information System (MIS) along with an updated website, marking a pivotal advancement in the modernization of Sri Lanka’s justice system. This initiative aims to bolster institutional efficiency, transparency, and accountability within the sector.

The MIS was established through the Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE), which is financed by the European Union. It has been developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice and implemented by UNDP and UNICEF in Sri Lanka. The updates to the Ministry’s website are part of this initiative, which seeks to foster digital transformation across the justice sector.

This innovative system is set to enhance the appointment process for key roles within the justice sector, such as Commissioners of Oaths, Inquirers into Sudden Deaths, Justices of the Peace, Unofficial Magistrates, and Sworn Translators. By introducing more structured procedures and refined selection criteria, the MIS aims to improve the transparency and integrity of these appointments, while also minimizing administrative delays and inconsistencies.

Furthermore, the MIS will enhance data management capabilities within the Ministry of Justice, facilitating more efficient record-keeping, improved information sharing, and better coordination among various institutions. This data-focused approach will aid in informed decision-making and promote a more responsive and effective delivery of services.

The updated website also features a comprehensive Citizen Services Information Portal, which is designed to provide the public with straightforward, accessible information regarding a variety of essential justice services. This portal allows users to easily find resources related to legal aid, mediation, arbitration, debt conciliation, and victim and witness protection services, thereby promoting greater awareness and access to support resources.

Additionally, the website includes a special section dedicated to the JURE communications campaign, “Know Your Neethi,” which features a series of legal education videos aimed at improving public legal awareness. By simplifying complex legal concepts and making them readily available, this initiative empowers citizens with the knowledge necessary to better understand their rights and obligations under the law.

During the launch event, officials from the Ministry of Justice, the European Union, and UNDP highlighted the significance of digital transformation in enhancing governance and improving access to justice. They remarked that the introduction of the MIS and the updated website signifies an essential progression towards establishing a more transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused justice system in Sri Lanka.
