Hambantota International Port (HIP) has notably enhanced its operational capabilities in light of a significant increase in global shipping activity, driven by the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. This expansion solidifies its role as a crucial alternative hub along the East-West shipping corridor.
In response to the shifting landscape, the port has successfully doubled its Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) yard capacity and increased its container yard capacity by 30%. This adjustment comes as shipping companies redirect their operations from disrupted routes in the Middle East in pursuit of more reliable and efficient alternatives.
HIP’s CEO, Wilson Qu, remarked on the situation, stating, “We are currently experiencing a fundamental transformation in global shipping dynamics. At HIP, we have prioritized enhancing our capacity and operational flexibility to adapt to these changes. Our rapid scalability, coupled with our strategic location, positions us to assist global shipping lines during critical times of reliability. The increase in vehicle transshipment and container traffic has led to record-high yard utilization levels at HIP, underscoring the extent of ongoing disruptions in the supply chain and the port’s rising significance in global commerce.
To manage the growing throughput, HIP has swiftly augmented its yard space for both cargo categories, allowing it to accommodate larger volumes while ensuring operational efficiency and reducing congestion. Expanding capacity within a short timeframe, especially in a functioning port, poses considerable operational and technical difficulties and demands substantial investment. Nevertheless, through careful collaboration among management, engineering, and operational teams, HIP successfully implemented these improvements in alignment with increasing demand.
Port officials credit the uptick in activity to HIP’s advantageous location, situated just 10 nautical miles from the principal East-West shipping route. This proximity enables vessels to make diversions with minimal detours, thereby preserving their schedules.
