US action in Venezuela a dangerous precedent: UN Secretary General

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave concerns over the recent actions taken by the United States in Venezuela, stating that these actions set a dangerous precedent and fail to uphold international law. This statement follows the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The Secretary-General’s statement highlighted his alarm regarding the escalation in Venezuela, particularly the United States’ military intervention, which, according to him, could have serious implications for the region. Guterres emphasized the importance of adhering to international law, including the UN Charter, by all parties involved.

In a special operation, American forces abducted President Maduro and his wife, transporting them to the United States to face trial. President Donald Trump announced plans for the U.S. to “run” Venezuela, with American companies set to invest in the country’s oil sector.

These actions have raised concerns about the international order established post-World War II, with Trump having previously undermined NATO. Bronwen Maddox, Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House, remarked that Russia might use the U.S. actions as a rationale for its invasion of Ukraine, while China could reference Venezuela in discussions concerning Taiwan. Maddox further noted that traditional U.S. allies might feel unsettled by these developments.
