Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has promised to personally intervene in a request from his Sri Lankan counterpart to aid in the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged by Cyclone Ditwah. This assurance was given during a brief visit to Sri Lanka, as detailed in a statement by Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Herath.

During discussions between the ministers, the focus was on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, development, and tourism. A significant part of the conversation was dedicated to Sri Lanka’s reconstruction efforts following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Minister Herath specifically requested Chinese assistance in rebuilding key infrastructure, including roads, railways, and bridges that were impacted by the cyclone. “Minister Wang Yi assured his personal intervention in this request and expressed confidence that Sri Lanka is on the right track for early recovery, reaffirming the Chinese Government’s fullest support,” Herath stated.

The visit by Wang Yi follows a recent visit by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who announced a pledge of US$450 million in assistance, including a US$100 million grant, to support Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts. India’s commitment includes restoring road, railway, and bridge connectivity, constructing houses, and supporting health, education, agriculture, and disaster preparedness systems.
