Sri Lankan Rupee Declines as Short-Term Bond Yields See Uptick

Sri Lanka’s rupee was quoted at 309.05/15 to the US dollar in the spot market on Tuesday, showing a slight weakening from 309.00/10 the previous day. The currency has depreciated over recent weeks, according to market dealers, with opening quotes for short tenors trending higher.

Bonds maturing on various dates showed varying yields. A bond maturing on March 15, 2028, was quoted at 9.15/25 percent. Meanwhile, a bond maturing on December 15, 2028, was quoted at 9.25/30 percent. A bond set to mature on December 15, 2029, saw an increase, quoted at 9.70/75 percent, up from the previous 9.65/70 percent. Additionally, a bond maturing on June 1, 2033, was quoted at 10.70/75 percent, also up from 10.65/75 percent. A bond maturing on June 15, 2035, maintained a steady rate, quoted at 11.15/20 percent.

The telegraphic transfer rates for the US dollar were 305.5000 for buying and 312.5000 for selling. The British pound was quoted at 410.7291 for buying and 422.0473 for selling. The euro was quoted at 353.9701 for buying and 365.3583 for selling.

On the Colombo Stock Exchange, the All Share Price Index (ASPI) experienced a slight increase of 0.10 percent, or 22.52 points, reaching 23,631. Conversely, the S&P SL20 index saw a minor decline of 0.05 percent, or 3.33 points, ending at 6,499.
