Sri Lanka Unveils First E-Gates to Enhance Border Security and Health Resilience

Sri Lanka has inaugurated its first Automated Border Control (ABC) e-gates at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), marking a significant step towards establishing a modern aviation hub. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation, the Embassy of Japan, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), aimed at streamlining passenger travel and enhancing the nation’s defenses against public health risks.

The project, with a valuation of USD 8.4 million, received funding from the Government of Japan and was implemented by the IOM. It incorporates state-of-the-art technology, including biometric access controls and advanced screening systems, to boost both security and efficiency at the country’s principal entry point.

Anura Karunathilaka, Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, stated, “Sri Lanka remains committed to advancing its aviation and port sectors through modernization, guided by global standards in safety, health, and sustainability.” He emphasized that these efforts fortify the nation’s position as a “secure and efficient gateway.”

The launch is particularly timely as Sri Lanka continues its recovery from the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. Japanese Ambassador H.E. Akio Isomata highlighted how the recent disaster emphasized the necessity of resilient borders. “The recent severe cyclone has underscored the importance of preparedness and resilience at borders, not only in response to pandemics, but also in the context of disasters,” Isomata noted. He further reiterated Japan’s long-term commitment to Sri Lanka’s sustainable development, which includes ongoing yen-loan assistance for a new terminal at BIA.

The IOM, responsible for leading the technical implementation, expressed pride in spearheading the technological innovation behind this milestone, noting its broader regional impact. Passengers are expected to benefit from faster immigration clearance through the new e-gates, significantly reducing waiting times.
