Sri Lanka today commemorated the 30th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Central Bank headquarters in Colombo, an incident that resulted in the loss of 41 Central Bank employees. A solemn event was held at the Central Bank premises, attended by Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and other officials.

During the commemoration, floral tributes were placed at the “Punorodgamanaya” memorial to honor those who perished in the attack. An interfaith religious observance was also conducted, offering prayers for the recovery of the injured.

The Central Bank, in a message shared on its official Facebook page, reflected on the attack that occurred on January 31, 1996. The message described how the event “shattered lives and silenced forty-one members of our Central Bank family,” emphasizing that their memory remains vivid despite the passage of time. The statement highlighted that the commemoration serves not only to mourn the victims but also to celebrate their courage, service, and resilience.

The terrorist attack on the Central Bank on January 31, 1996, stands as one of the most devastating attacks in Colombo, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries.
