Royal College emerged victorious at the annual Royal–Thomian Golf Tournament held today, following an intense and closely contested competition between alumni of Royal College and S. Thomas’ College.
More than 120 Royalists and Thomians participated in the event, creating a highly competitive atmosphere as some of Sri Lanka’s top amateur and professional golf players took part in the prestigious match.
Among many rounds of golf played during the day, one of the decisive performance that secured the trophy for Royal came from Dr. Senarath Yapa, whose strong finish in the closing stages of the tournament helped swing the competition in Royal’s favour. He was partnered by the relatively unknown golf talent Nishan Sumanadeera, whose impressive play proved instrumental in delivering the final points needed for victory.
This Classical round of golf was played by Dr Senarath Yapa, Nishan Sumanadeera against Maneth Jayasinghe and Arjun Dharmadasa.
The combined effort of the Royal college team captained by Gamini Jayaweera ultimately ensured that the Fred De Saram Trophy returned once again to Royal College, following a day of spirited rivalry and camaraderie between the two historic schools.
The Fred De Saram Trophy was first presented in 1970 and for over five decades this annual encounter has brought together generations of Royalists and Thomians, further strengthening the longstanding ties between the two institutions while fostering a shared commitment to the game of golf. What began as a cordial alumni gathering has evolved into one of Sri Lanka’s most coveted golfing events, attracting both accomplished veterans and emerging players from the esteemed alumni bodies of both schools.
The Royal College side was led by Captain Gamini Jayaweera and Vice-Captain Andy Anderson, while St. Thomas’ College taken the course under Captain Rohan Fernando and Vice-Captain Arjun Dharmadasa. With strong leadership on both sides, the stage is set for a fiercely competitive contest played with true sportsmanship that embodies the Royal–Thomian spirit.
The tournament showcased not only the depth of golfing talent among Royalists and Thomians, but also the enduring tradition of friendly competition that continues to unite the alumni of the two institutions long after their famous cricket encounters.
Royal supporters celebrated the victory as another proud moment for the college’s sporting legacy, with the team demonstrating resilience and skill throughout the tournament.
