In an impressive showcase of academic prowess and research skills, four graduates from the SLIIT Business School have successfully converted their final-year theses into four internationally recognized publications in Q1-ranked, Scopus-indexed journals. This level of accomplishment is quite rare among undergraduate students, both in Sri Lanka and worldwide.
The research was conducted under the expert supervision of Professor Ruwan Jayathilaka, the Head of the Information Management Department at SLIIT Business School. His mentorship ensured that the research adhered to stringent methodologies and produced outcomes that are relevant to policy-making. This achievement illustrates the potential of undergraduate research when aligned with global academic standards.
The studies investigate a significant and pressing issue in the realm of global economics: the ways in which nations can effectively manage globalization to foster sustainable and long-term economic growth. In a climate where countries are reassessing their trade policies, foreign investments, and strategies for digital transformation, the students’ research offers evidence-based insights that are relevant on a global scale and applicable in practice.
Instead of viewing globalization as a uniform phenomenon, the research highlights its varied impacts across different nations, income brackets, and regions. The findings indicate that the efficacy of policies is heavily influenced by a country’s institutional integrity, governance quality, human capital, and readiness for technological advancement. By doing so, the research challenges oversimplified views and proposes tailored strategies for economies classified as low, middle, and high income.
The four published studies collectively present evidence-based recommendations aimed at governments, development organizations, and economic strategists. Among the key policy suggestions derived from the research are well-calibrated trade liberalization, the strategic pursuit of foreign direct investment, necessary institutional and governance reforms, investments in education and skills training, and the enhancement of digital infrastructure to improve global competitiveness.
Significantly, these studies align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring the importance of inclusive and sustainable economic integration. By connecting globalization strategies with long-term development frameworks, the research enriches policy discussions focused on sustainable growth, resilience, and equitable economic transformation.
The research team consists of Dinithi Athalage, Piyara Wijesuriya, Irushi Sandanayaka, and Danushi Rathnayake, all final-year undergraduates whose work now plays a role in international policy discussions in global economics. Their combined success not only showcases individual commitment and analytical proficiency but also reflects the nurturing research environment cultivated within the SLIIT Business School.
This achievement marks a significant change in undergraduate education, indicating a shift away from merely producing thesis projects for academic evaluation. Instead, students are increasingly contributing to global academic discourse and real-world policy formulation. By successfully publishing in high-impact journals, these graduates have proven that undergraduate research, when supported by robust supervision and methodological rigor, can achieve the highest standards recognized internationally.
For the SLIIT Business School, this accomplishment enhances its reputation in research and underscores its dedication to developing graduates who are equipped to influence economic thought and strategy. In a world that is becoming more interconnected, the success of these undergraduates serves as a compelling affirmation of SLIIT’s academic ambitions, research leadership, and commitment to cultivating graduates who can make a global impact.
