Sri Lanka calls for respect for international law, UN conventions after US attack on Venezuela

The Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Vijitha Herath, has announced the country’s support for United Nations intervention following the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by the United States, which occurred amid attacks on Venezuela’s defense installations.

Minister Herath emphasized the necessity for actions to adhere to United Nations Conventions to safeguard international law and the sovereignty of nations. “It is essential that actions should be taken in a way that is according to United Nations Conventions, to protect international law and the independence of countries,” he stated during a press briefing on Sunday.

Herath highlighted that all United Nations member states are committed to these principles, and a UN Security Council meeting has been scheduled for Sunday to address the situation. “From our side, we are also calling for it to be hastened,” Herath added, urging prompt action.

“The UN has to take measures for acting against violations of the UN conventions and fundamental principles. That is our stance,” he affirmed.

The United States initiated its actions against Venezuela on the grounds of alleged drug trafficking to the US. Following President Maduro’s abduction, US President Donald Trump announced plans to develop Venezuela’s oil resources.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern, stating that Trump’s actions could set a dangerous precedent. Guterres noted that Trump has disrupted the international order established post-World War II and undermined NATO, which has played a crucial role in preventing major conflicts in Europe.
