Sri Lanka Cricket Steps Up in Wake of Cyclone Ditwah

As Cyclone Ditwah swept across Sri Lanka in late 2025, unleashing floods, landslides, and widespread displacement, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) emerged as a key contributor to relief and recovery efforts. Recognizing its national role beyond sport, the board acted swiftly to support both government initiatives and directly affected communities.

Financial Support for National Recovery

SLC made a substantial donation of Rs. 300 million to the government’s “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Fund, which channels resources toward emergency relief, infrastructure restoration, and community recovery. Approved by SLC President Shammi Silva and the Executive Committee, the contribution was intended to provide immediate aid to families displaced by flooding and to support the restoration of critical public services. This positioned SLC among the largest institutional contributors, alongside corporate and philanthropic donors, highlighting the role of national sporting bodies in social responsibility.

Operational Assistance and Relief Distribution

Beyond financial support, SLC mobilized its administrative and operational resources to assist on the ground. Staff coordinated with government officials to facilitate smooth functioning of relief centres, including sites in Colombo, and contributed to daily distribution of meal packets for flood-affected residents. These efforts helped ensure that immediate humanitarian needs, particularly food security and shelter, were met during the critical early stages of disaster response.

Signif icance of SLC’s Engagement

Cricket holds a central place in Sri Lankan national identity, and SLC’s actions underscore how prominent institutions can extend influence and capacity beyond their primary mandate in times of crisis. By combining financial contributions with practical on-the-ground support, SLC provided both material aid and a signal of national solidarity.
