FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Sri Lankan cabinet has decided to delay the implementation of education reforms for Grade 6 following public concern over the inclusion of a gay adult content site in an English textbook, according to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

“While we support the need for education reforms, as a government, we will not move forward if there is any doubt,” Jayatissa stated during a press conference.

The updated curriculum is now scheduled to be introduced in 2027.

Although the first term of the academic year has commenced in state schools across Sri Lanka, Grade 6 students have yet to receive their textbooks.

Both the Education Ministry and the Criminal Investigations Department have initiated separate investigations to determine how the adult site was included in the Grade 6 English textbook, Jayatissa reported.

Despite the controversy, Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that the education reforms will be implemented. (Colombo/Jan13/2026)
