Sri Lanka is expected to see increased rainfall from Tuesday as an easterly wave strengthens showery conditions across much of the island, the Department of Meteorology said Monday.

Showers are forecast at times in the Northern, North- Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces on Dec. 16, the department said in its daily weather bulletin issued at 2 p.m. Showers or thundershowers are also likely in several other areas after 1 p.m.

“Under the influence of an easterly wave, showery conditions are expected to enhance over the island,” the Department of Meteorology said, warning of localized weather impacts.

Fairly strong winds of about 30 to 40 kmph are expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central and North Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Misty conditions are also likely during the early morning hours in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

The department urged the public to take precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.

Weather officials said residents in vulnerable areas should remain alert, particularly during afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm activity is expected to increase.
