The Sri Lankan government is exploring the integration of all government institutions with critical information infrastructure into the National Cyber Security Operations Centre (NCSOC), according to a statement from the President’s Media Division (PMD). This initiative was a focal point during a special discussion held on Tuesday, jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) and the Ministry of Digital Economy.

The PMD highlighted that this meeting represented a significant advancement in enhancing the nation’s cyber security framework. Participants emphasized that in today’s world, cyber security transcends technical concerns and has become a national priority impacting security, economic stability, and public trust.

Policy-level decisions necessary for the initiative have already been approved by the Cabinet. The second phase, which involves connecting additional government institutions to the cyber security center, is slated for completion by the end of this year. The focus will initially be on critical state institutions, which will also undergo audits conducted by the National Audit Office.

This new system aims to mitigate and manage disruptions to essential services caused by cyber threats, such as the defacement of government websites, ransomware attacks, and data breaches. Through the NCSOC, government institutions will benefit from real-time threat monitoring, early warning systems, and coordinated incident response capabilities.

The initiative is viewed not merely as a compliance measure but as a strategic investment in building institutional credibility and resilience.
