FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – In his New Year message, President Anura Dissanayake emphasized the long journey ahead for Sri Lankans and called on citizens to unite in the nation’s rebuilding efforts. “Understanding clearly the challenges that lie before us, I invite all of you to join hands in unity, determination, and confidence in the task of rebuilding our nation,” the message stated.

President Dissanayake expressed his firm belief that with the unwavering resolve of the citizens, Sri Lanka can collectively create a nation far superior to the one inherited. The message is presented in full below:

As we enter the New Year 2026, we do so as a nation that has undertaken the most comprehensive reform program and reconstruction effort in our modern history. Despite numerous challenges, 2025 laid the groundwork for sustainable development aligned with our national aspirations.

Among the notable economic achievements of the past year were the lowest recorded budget deficit since 1977, the highest government revenue since 2007, the first-ever primary account surplus in our history, an increase in export earnings from goods and services to nearly USD 17 billion, and the achievement of unprecedented government revenue targets. Additionally, 2025 marked the year with the highest tourist arrivals in the country. These milestones make 2025 a truly exceptional year in Sri Lanka’s economic journey.

Equally significant, 2025 will be remembered as a pivotal year in the nation’s political and social transformation. The implementation of initiatives such as fostering a clean, people-centered political culture and the nationwide “A Nation United” mission to protect future generations from narcotic drugs reflected the long-held aspirations of the Sri Lankan people.

This year also witnessed one of the most severe natural disasters in recent history. In the face of adversity, citizens across the country demonstrated solidarity, showcasing the nation’s compassion and humanity. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Sri Lankans living abroad, friendly nations that offered support during this challenging time, and the Police, Tri-Forces, and entire state service who worked selflessly, often at great personal risk, to respond to the disaster. While we have a long journey ahead, we will walk it together.

History teaches us that the courage and determination of people are the greatest strengths behind the rebuilding of any fallen nation. I firmly believe that with the unwavering resolve of our beloved citizens, we can collectively recreate a country far better than the one we inherited.

The dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to reflect on past lessons while planning anew with optimism for the future. Understanding the challenges before us, I invite everyone to join hands in unity, determination, and confidence in the task of rebuilding our nation. May the New Year 2026 be a victorious year where all your hopes and aspirations are fulfilled.
