Sri Lanka’s Meteorological Department Alerts Public to Intense Thunderstorms and Lightning Threats

Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department has issued a warning regarding the likelihood of thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning in several regions, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern, Northwestern, and North-Central provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, and Trincomalee, starting from 2 PM.

This advisory, released at noon on Monday, will remain in effect until 11 PM the same evening. The department has urged the public to take necessary precautions to reduce the risks associated with lightning strikes.

There is also a possibility of brief but strong gusts of wind during the thunderstorms. In light of this, the Meteorology Department has recommended the following safety measures:

  • Seek indoor shelter whenever possible, and avoid taking refuge under trees.
  • Stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations, and bodies of water during thunderstorms.
  • Refrain from using wired telephones and any connected electrical appliances during these weather events.
  • Avoid traveling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats.
  • Be cautious of downed trees and power lines.

For urgent assistance, individuals are advised to reach out to local disaster management services.
