The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, is set to depart the island nation on January 16, marking the conclusion of her nearly four-year tenure in Colombo.

In a statement, Chung expressed her affection for the country, saying, “I have loved every moment of my time in Sri Lanka.” She emphasized her commitment from the outset to advancing American interests, which included strengthening security partnerships, expanding trade and investment, and promoting education and democratic values that fortify both nations. “Together, we’ve built a relationship that delivers results for the American people and supports a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific,” she noted.

Chung commenced her role in February 2022. During her tenure, she witnessed significant milestones such as the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Sri Lanka in 2023, the return of US Peace Corps volunteers in 2024, and the 80th anniversary of the Fulbright Program. She also oversaw the relocation of the US Embassy to its new facility in October 2022.

Under Chung’s leadership, the US Embassy advanced several initiatives aimed at supporting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. This included US backing for the IMF Extended Fund Facility and multiple packages from the US Department of Agriculture to bolster food security.

Until the arrival of a new US Ambassador, Deputy Chief of Mission Jayne Howell will assume the role of Chargé d’Affaires.
